Off to Germany next year to watch England win the World Cup... :o I will be doing mega miles.

Dont know whether to buy a manual or an auto diesel. (2003 ish model)

What sort of fuel economy can I expect cruising at normal motorway speeds with an auto and a manual?

Anyone a MPG devil like myself??

:o

Jeez! ever thought of hitting the search engine? nearly every topic on the forum eventually turns to TDI MPG figures :o if your really stuck and cant find the figures type in old git's or string backed driveing :o

Bitchy...........

Depends on how hard your right foot is down, tha galaxy isn't the most aerodynamic vehicle. With my 115 Auto 60 gives me about 47 ish to the gallon, 75-80 it drops to 44 or thereabouts. The manuals I beleive are slightly better but who wants to mess about with wiggly sticks and too many pedals?

hi peeps

i use the search facility on the forum &

it's near bloody useless

that's why people ask the usual questions on here

for the guy's that's on this forum all the time why not

make a copy of any decent info they put up & use the old cut"n"paste

save info into for instance my documents &

you can just add it as needed instead of

saying

use the search or use the tis disk !!

i am not having a go at anyone but it pees me off to se replies on

the forum giving useless info

the guy just askd for mipg etc of wich is a decent question

he should hav asked me dont you think jono80 lol

have a good children in-need guys

LOL

My Galaxy is a Manual but last year I had a Seat Alhambra TDI Auto as a hire car for work.

Initially I kept trying to press the non existant clutch when I got to a roundabout but soon got used to that.

When I got back home and got into my Galaxy I was OK changing gears but kept on forgetting to press the clutch when coming to a stop.

Dont know what MPG I get from my 2.0 petrol but it isnt much. The Alhambra was well impresive. We had 6 people on board with position 7 filled with luggage, aircon running and a mixture of driving at 70ish where possible or 0mph on large sections of the M25 car park for the journeys there and back and during the week quite a bit of round town driving from the hotel to our course and overall MPG worked out to be about 44mpg

Would love a TDI Auto. Maybe when I replace my current one :)

Resistance is futile, come, join the collective......

Would love to and will as soon as I can afford it. I much prefer diesels.

Recently got rid of an aging Pug 309GLD which I bought with 125K on the clock, sold it after 6 years with 280K on the clock to someone who wanted a cheap banger for the Staples to Naple rally. He did nothing to the car other than the oil change it was due for and then completed over 6000 miles on the round trip with no problems whatsoever.

Diesels just go on forever and the fuel economy is superb. I was still getting 52mpg when I sold it. Engine was fine but just about everything else was worn out. It looked as if it had been lowered but that was just because the suspension was knackered !!!

It took an awful long time to get used to driving a petrol vehicle again. I found the accelleration to be rubbish because I kept changing gear FAR too early. I was changing gear at about 3000 revs and I still forget to change down when the revs get low. Also cant get use to lack of engine braking. I used to wonder why people kept using their brakes when all I used to do was lift my foot off the throttle.

Biggest problem I have now is changing between the Galaxy and the other car. Its a Hyundai and the indicator and wiper stalks are the opposite way round :)

There was a monster pick-up outside the other day...Dodge 5.7 litre. NICE

An interesting point, I said the same thing recently about our Xantia diesel (same engine) but was told that petrols had better braking due to the throttle.

Maybe if you have a 6 litre V8 or something but certainly not a 2 litre Galaxy!

Diesels have much higher compression therefore it would take more energy to compress the air in the cylinders therefore slowing you down more. At least, thats how I figure it to be

Braking is much higher on diesels than petrol. The higher the compression the greater the braking effect, throttling the inlet as in petrol will cause less braking than wide open throttle due to having less air in the cylinders to compress.

jeez, thanks for your replies...

So around 45 upwards if driven carefully with only a half a load in. Thanks you guys.

my 2001 1.9TDI AUTOMATIC Galaxy does about 43 mpg at best, and to be honest, i am happy to loose a few mpg's for the luxury of no clutches and gear sticks lol, manual cars really bug me!

I find if I drive as if I don't have brakes high 40's is easily acheived especially if the top speed is kept down. I used to go to Grimsby once per week a 90 mile round trip. If I kept the speed down below 50 the mpg's hit high 40's and on a couple of occasions into th 50's. I have on one occasion managed 60+mpg but that was with a strong following wind blowing.

My manual does around 48mpg if I stick to 60 mph or around 44 if I stick to 70mph. If I don't care when I get somewhere and stick at 50mph I have had 56mpg.

At 50mph in 6th I am only doing around 1400rpm! he damn things only just running!!

Thats the way to do it :)

Why on earth these petrol heads like the sound of screaming engines is beyond me.

Too right mate. It can be very soothing to listen to the gentle throb of a deisel knowing that you won't have to worry about finding a filling station for another 700 miles.

Ron.

:) :) :(

lol, forgot to mention, 43 is mixed driving, light footed, with AC on.

havent yet found out the maximum it can get, but i am happy with 40+

Lets be honest it's not that hard to use the search engine but some people are just too stupid or lazy! just typeing in fuel consumption or mpg figures opens up to three pages on the topic :) mainly about TDI's wether or not they are the engine type in question :( and strangely enough the same members keep adding to the ever enlargeing list of topics on TDI MPG figures :) maybe you could ask the site admin if you could have your own section on TDI MPG and plastic shed pulling? ;)

yours 3000+ miles away and about to drive to the local bar in my 5.7 hemi that does 16MPG with or without a plastic shed hooked up to it :D

With an engine like that you could probably drag the shed without wheels and still not notice the diference :)

I remember reading an American Custom Van magazine many moons ago and in one review they felt that the standard engine may be slightly underpowered for heavy hill climbing etc and it might be better to opt for the optional larger engine.

Standard was 5.7 litre, option was 7.2 litre.

By comparison, a Ford Transit came as standard with a 1.6 litre with an option for 2.0 litre. Very few diesel transits at that time. (circa 1979)

So you'd want to belong to the I can get 0 to 60 0.1 seconds quicker than you AND mine is 50 mm lower than yours AND I can really shake up my passengers group then? :D

Sounds like you're having a good time stateside, are you staying there permanently or are you detined back to the homeland? I'm hoping to get some contracts in the South Carolina's Easter time next year so fingers crossed :D

Off to pull my plastic shed full of model aircraft, generators, mucrowave, BBQ and tea urn.

Leave me alone

I like being on stilts, my H.I.D.s are just at a nice level for burning out the retinas of the brats in their Corsas !

I personally like the ride height of the Gal, get a better view and I'm not one for screeching round corners though I must say when pushed (I'm a First Responder so get 999 calls) I find the handling predicatble and safe and isn't that far behind standard cars.

just cause i like it low dont mean i scretch round corners

but fair play to you if you like yours where factory spec put it

i got v6 rear wheel drive for the corner stuff and getting to work at silly oclock when some sets of my alarm

Maybe we should ask them to open a section for the biggest misery guts on the planet! your over 3000 miles away, yet you still manage to have a complete bitch about someone asking a simple question!

put it this way, if everyone used the search engine, then don't you think this forum would get a bit boring? its already gone too serious for my liking, but there you go...

you either like caravanning or you don't, if you don't, then leave us alown. my two hobbies go hand in hand lovely, i like caravanning and when i get there, some relaxing flying of my RC Planes is great, then return to the van, and have a BBQ with a nice glass of wine.
